On behalf of the Riverside, Whittier Mill Village and Vinings on the Chattahoochee neighborhoods, I would like to announce the Tri-Neighborhood Cleanup Day happening this Saturday from 9am til 1pm. We have been attempting to pull together our neighbors that share the James Jackson/Bolton Road crossing into more community projects and events. This will be our second official gathering and our first attempt to bring people together to help cleanup our streets, parks, and facilities in the area.

Street Cleaning of James Jackson and Bolton, 2. WMV Park “hill” cleaning, 3. an inside job for those wanting to beat the heat (TBD).

The fine folks at FBC Chattahoochee will have bagels, doughnuts, drinks, etc at the welcome table and we will be giving out a $5.00 coupon to Hottie Hawgs just for showing up to help. Hottie Hawgs will also have some post-clean specials at the restaurant to welcome us in from the heat.

Please try and make it out this weekend and join us for a few hours of cleaning and community.

thanks and see you there.

Folks,

We are committed to making the Riverside Monument a welcoming focal point for our neighborhood. One step we are undertaking is the beautification of the buildings that occupy that space. We have already painted the building a more pleasing color and the next phase will be to install signage that gives the building tenants a better presence. I am attaching the mock ups we have had commissioned by Riverside resident and Graphic Artist, Brenton Smith. This monument is something I envision all of Riverside taking pride in and using as a way to welcome your guests to your neighborhood. Take a look and keep an eye out for the real signs coming soon.

Hello Neighbors!

Tonight is the neighborhood meeting for May. The meeting will start at 7pm and is at the Main Street Fire Station. We have lots of good information to present and hope you can make it out tonight to join us.

One thing I would like to point out is the raffle starting this evening for Mr. Imagination to help support his recent accident. We will have tickets at the meeting tonight for $5.00 a piece and we will be selling them throughout the month around the neighborhood. Look for us around town for your chance to win a piece of folk art history by New Orlean’s own folk artist, Dr. Bob. We will draw the winner at next month’s meeting so you have plenty of time to get your tickets.

See you all tonight.

This Tuesday at 7:30pm, the NPU-D meeting will be held at the Agape Center. On this month’s agenda is a resolution presented by the Coalition to Keep Adams Drive Open through the Bolton Neighborhood Association.

The resolution reads as this:
· A resolution in opposition to the proposed closing of Adams Drive at Marietta Blvd unless and until an alternative connection is made from Adams to Marietta and a signal light has been installed at the new connection point.

After going through an enormous amount of emailing today, it was understood that this resolution, if passed, can have immediate and severe impacts on the Moores Mill Shopping Center development. This impact was not clearly understood from the beginning of the Adams Drive closing and after today’s correspondence it was understood through email with Felicia Moore that this could be very significant.

Felicia stated this to me in her email:

First the intersection improvements and the extension of Moores Mill Road are two separate projects. However, let me again state how they are linked. In an effort to find funding to help build the Moores Mill Road extension, my office and the Department of Public Works have been working diligently with E&A (the developers) to finalize the design and come up with the funding needed. In that effort, we determined that the money E&A was going to spend to build streetscape improvements could be used to go to needed funding for the Moores Mill Road extension because of the already programmed intersection improvements. This is approximately, $400,000.

As you know, the intersection improvements at this time include the closure of Adams Drive. The department is also working on an alternative, but there are no concrete answers at this time. If the City chooses not to move forward with the intersection improvements, the funding will be lost. If the funding is lost, E&A will then have to build its own streetscape improvements around the development. Thus, the $400,000 they were going to contribute to the Moores Mill Road extension construction will no longer be available.

Whatever you opinion is on this matter of closing Adams Drive, I feel confident in saying that no one wants to halt progress on the Moores Mill Shopping Center. Please join us this Tuesday to learn more about this resolution, become completely informed, and then vote based on the discussion that follows.

This is a reminder for tomorrow night’s RNA meeting at 7pm. As always, our monthly meetings are at the Fire Station on Main Street and everyone is invited. We encourage everyone to get out and join us for this occasion and meet and greet with some of your neighbors.

One reminder is that the annual neighborhood fundraiser, RIVERFEST, is coming up very soon, May 7th (check out post below for more details). We would love for everyone to be there and to bring one or two friends with you. More information about that at the meeting tomorrow night.

[UPDATE] We are also happy to announce a very special addition for tomorrow night’s RNA Meeting. Mr. Imagination, our resident folk artist extraordinaire, will be speaking to the neighborhood to discuss his upcoming installation in Italy for the American Folk Art Museum exhibit during the Venice Biennale in June of 2011.

In an effort to have more variety at the Neighborhood Meetings we would like to formally extend invitations to everyone to come out and learn about this event, ask questions and speak with Mr. Imagination before he heads to Italy in June. We will also have the normal city reports and agenda but we would like to focus tomorrow’s meeting on Mr. Imagination and his upcoming installation. Thanks everyone and see you tomorrow night!

There are two opportunities this week (Aug. 22nd-28th) to help out Riverside. Many people have been asking how to help out and this is a great way to do it.

August 24th – This Tuesday at 8:30am we will begin breaking ground on the beautification project for the Riverside monument at the “Y” in the road at Bolton and Hollywood. Thibaut at Le Jardin Francais and Tierson at Boutte Tree are heading this project and need you help. They will begin the soil phase of this project removing several cubic feet of Georgia clay and replacing it with soil that will be more suitable for a good growing environment. We need your help with shoveling dirt, directing traffic, and any other work that needs done. This will all take place in front of the Simmon’s Seafood building and every body we can get is much needed. We all realize that this is during a work day but try and make it out to help your hood or recommend someone you know in the area that works from home or has non-traditional work hours.

August 28th – The Riverside Residents Association is laying the sod on the children’s soccer field and they need your help with that project. Arrive at 8:00am at the soccer field at the intersection of Main and Hollywood (southeast corner) and bring work gloves. This project is a great way to help the children of Riverside and you will be able to meet some important people in Riverside that help make a difference everyday.

Please PLEASE PLEASE try and make it out to one of these two volunteer efforts. I really hope that we can get people out on Tuesday especially as that will be the tough day for people to make it out.

Jeremy Jones, President
Riverside Neighborhood Association, Inc.
